- Keep it Positive – No matter what the reason is for your move, speak positively about the transition. Try to encourage excitement about the new adventure.
- Talk to Your Kids about the Move – Listen to any fears or concerns your children may have. Determine solutions to help alleviate any anxiety they may feel.
- Let Your Children be Part of the Decision Process – Once you’ve narrowed down your home search, take them to visit potential homes and neighborhoods.
- Be a Tourist in Your New Area – Take the kids to local attractions, like a mall, amusement park, aquarium or movie theater. Show them what makes the new neighborhood so appealing!
- Help Build Your Children’s Social Network – Enrolling the kids in local sports, clubs and activities, hopefully before school starts, will help your children make friends and help them feel as if they fit in.
- Make the New Home Feel Like Home – By having your children’s favorite things around, they’ll feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Nothing says HOME like the familiar things that make your kids feel safe. This could be a poster that adorns their wall, a favorite stuffed animal or collage of their friends. Also, let them choose their paint color for their new bedroom!
- Have Their Friends Come for a Visit – If possible, invite some of their old friends for a weekend once you have settled in
- Be Patient and Understanding – Be sure to give your children ample time to adjust to their new home and their new friends.
