Welcome back as we conclude our series on HOUSE REPAIRS 101. Here’s a few more home repair emergency tips we’d like to share. Of course, we know we didn’t cover everything a homeowner needs to know about their house, BUT we hope you found them to be helpful and informative!
Change Your Air Filters
Changing the filter in your heating and air conditioning system doesn’t qualify as an emergency BUT could prevent one in the future. A dirty air filter that restricts air flow wastes energy by requiring your heating and air conditioning systems to work harder. It will also cause parts to wear out and hasten a system breakdown. If Murphy’s Law holds true, the system will breakdown during a particularly severe heat wave – and that’s an emergency!
Be sure to change the filters throughout the summer and winter for your HVAC system. The same filter works for both the heating and cooling systems. Check it monthly and replace it when it looks dirty – or clean it, if it is a reusable filter. For optimum results, you should change or clean the filter at least every 3 months.
Open Garage Doors Without Power
This one’s easy! You should see a cord – probably red – hanging overhead from part of your garage door opener. When you pull the cord, it disengages the opener. At this point, you can then open the garage door by hand.
HOWEVER, if the door is open when the power fails, don’t attempt to pull the cord as it could cause the door to disengage and free-fall. This would be a GREAT TIME to call a local overhead door company.
