HOME REPAIRS 101 … Instructions NOT Included – Are YOU Prepared? (Part 1/4)

We all know that most homes don’t come with instruction manuals and, without a doubt, those little emergencies are bound to pop up. NEW home owners, especially, may not be equipped to deal with them promptly … SO … We have compiled a list of topics for some typical tasks that ALL homeowners should learn to handle. It certainly doesn’t cover everything you’ll need to know about your home BUT it’s a great place to start…

  1. Put YOUR Tool Kit Together TODAY and How to Find the Water Main Shutoff
  2. How to Restart a Garbage Disposal and Unclog a Toilet
  3. How to Change Your Air Filters and Put Out a Grease Fire
  4. How to Reset the Electrical Power and Open Garage Overhead Doors Without Power

What’s in YOUR tool kit?

The following MUST-HAVES should be in every new AND seasoned home owner’s tool kits: a curved-claw hammer, an adjustable wrench, needle-nose and standard pliers, slotted and Phillips screwdrivers in a couple of sizes and a pair of safety glasses. An electric drill and a set of twist bits are also invaluable. Cordless drills are convenient but may not offer enough torque to handle those heavier jobs. If you start with a corded drill you can pick up a convenient cordless model, at a later time, to use for those lighter jobs.

Investing in good-quality tools that feel comfortable in your hand is worth every penny. Take care of them and they’ll last for years!

Where is YOUR water main shutoff?

When a water pipe leaks, it needs to be fixed right away, otherwise, it can do significant damage to your home and your finances. Water shutoff valves for individual pipes are typically found along supply lines and near fixtures, but those valves can break. Therefore, it’s important to know how to stop the water supply to the whole house. The main shutoff valve might be right next to an outdoor meter or may even be inside the house. Some water lines have 2 shutoff valves, one on each side. If yours does, it is recommended that you use the valve farthest from the street.

As a precautionary measure, it is a good idea to close and open the main water shutoff valve once a year to help prevent it from corroding!
